Samuel was born in Tideswell, Derbyshire, the youngest of at least five children of Samuel (a coal agent) and Sarah Lomas of Church Street, Tideswell. He married Sarah Ann Gibbs in 1905 and they had at least one child William Howe born in 1909. He had served in the South African War and afterwards was an inspector of mines and quarries in the Doncaster area. He enlisted at Chesterfield, Derbyshire and was stationed in Ireland from 24th June 1916 until he went to France on 25th February 1917.
The award of the Distinguished Conduct Medal was gazetted on 3rd March 1917 in relation to activities during the Irish Rebellion, …For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He erected barricades under very heavy fire and set a splendid example throughout… Company Sergeant Major Samuel Henry Lomas DCM, 241062 (3415), 2nd/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment).
He died on 27th April 1917, aged 37, during an attack on Quarries and Cologne Farm in the Hargicourt area.
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
