KILLED IN ACTION ON THE SOMME ON 3 JULY 1916
John McFadyen was born at Dunoon, Argyllshire, and attested for the Highland Light Infantry and served with the 15th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from 23 November 1915.

He was awarded the Military Medal published in the London Gazette 19 February 1917 for his part in a successful patrol on 13 January 1916, which resulted in the death of three of the enemy.

He was killed in action on 3 July 1916, on which date the Battalion was involved in an attack on the enemy’s line near the Leipzig Salient.

He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.
