Robert Reilly Patterson was born in Ipswich, Suffolk and attested for the Royal Artillery in London in August 1904 aged 16 years and 2 months.
He was promoted Corporal in March 1914 and, having been posted to the 47th (Howitzer) Battery in April of that year, served with them as part of the 44th (Howitzer) Brigade in Charles Munro’s 2nd Division during the Great War on the Western Front from 16 August 1914.
He was killed in action on 24 October 1914 during the First battle of Ypres.
Private Patterson was the son of William John and Letitia Patterson of 5 Tadema Road, King’s Road, Chelsea, London and, having no known grave, is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
