Robert Henry Critchley was born in 1897 and enlisted at Preston, being posted to the 2/4th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment.
He entered the war in France on 8 February 1917 and the unit entered the front line on 25 February. Critchley was wounded in action on 28 July 1917, presumably as part of a tour of the front line although the Battalion was not involved in a big action until the Battle of Passchendaele.
Mortally wounded in action he died of his wounds on 17 November 1917 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery, France.
He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal for gallantry which appeared in the London Gazette on 28 September 1917.
