186 Company Sergeant Major Denis Joseph Strickland, M.M., was born in Weston-super-Mare and served during the Great War with the 1/4th (City of Bristol) Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, Territorial Force.

CSM Strickland was killed in action, on the 17th July 1916 when the 1/4th Battalion were heavily engaged in action west and north-west of the village of Ovillers, Somme. 

Strickland is buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuille Wood, Somme, France.
