Lance Corporal, 54245, 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, was born in Stockton, Co. Durham, one of at least seven children of Francis (a former soldier and later a coachman) and Mary Grimshaw.
He married Margaret Griffiths in 1904. They had four children, Dorothy Mavis (born in 1905), Hayden Francis (born in 1907), Donald Griffith (born in 1909) and Maisie E. (born in 1914).
He was employed as a trimmer in the Mellingriffith Iron Works, Whitchurch, Glamorgan and lived in the town.
He enlisted at Cardiff and had only been at the front six weeks when he was killed.
He died on 2nd November 1916, aged 38, during fighting around Bulgar trench.
