Horace Edward Saunders, son of William and Margaret Saunders of Watford Hertfordshire, was born 3 September 1915 in Forest Gate, West Ham, London. The 1921 census shows his Father's occupation as 'manufacturing upholsterer', and his Mother as a 'shop assistant'.
The 1939 Register shows Horace living in Ilford Essex and working as a 'fish shop assistant.
He served during the Second World War in HM Submarine P222. He was most likely killed in action when P222 (a third-batch S-class submarine built for the Royal Navy and commissioned in 1942) was sunk by the Italian Ciclone class torpedo boat Fortunale off Capri on 12 December 1942 (although the Fortunale claimed to have sunk a submarine by depth charges, the sinking has never been confirmed, although this was the only submarine loss that tallies).
Saunders was officially discharged dead on 21 December 1942 aged 27, the date P222 was reported overdue at Algiers, and is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.
