Walter was born on 20th December 1876 in Wandsworth, Surrey, the youngest of the three children of Henry (a colonial merchant) and Evelyn Jane Geard who later lived at 8 Ardwick Road, Hampstead, London.
He was educated at the City of London School and Dover College.
Walter served in the South African war with the Rand Rifles (1901 to 1902) and later entered the Territorials as second lieutenant in January 1909.
He and his wife May Victoria Geard lived at Helenslea, Burgess Park, Hampstead.
He went to France on 5th October 1915, his promotion to major was only announced five days before he died.
Major Walter Leslie Geard, ‘C’ Battery, 282nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery died on 26th June 1916, aged 39, during fighting at Hebuterne.
