Bert was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, one of the twelve children of Charles (a coachman and gardener) and Phoebe Haycox of 55 Duke Street, Cheltenham.
He was employed as an engine driver when he enlisted at Ferndale, Glamorgan on 1st September 1914 and went to Belgium on 8th April 1915. He saw action at Hill 60 in May and his exposure to gas meant he had to be treated in hospitals at Boulogne and Rouen.
He was again wounded during the fighting on the Somme front on 20th August 1916.
Private, Bert Haycox, 3/8168, 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died on 15th April 1917, aged 22, he was slightly wounded in the fighting around Cepy Farm and was killed whilst making his own way back to a dressing station.
He is also commemorated on the Cheltenham Borough (Promenade) memorial.
