Edwin was born in Deptford, Kent, one of seven children of Rueben (a hammerman) and Ruth Rice.
Edwin initially worked in the metal trade but latterly had been a timekeeper.
He married Louisa Littlecott in 1907 and there were six children born between 1908 and 1915. The family lived at 21 Benbow Buildings, Deptford. After his death Louisa married Arthur Denaby.
Edwin enlisted at Deptford on 2nd December 1914 and was appointed lance corporal in March 1915. He went to France on 6th July 1915 and reverted to private two days later.
He was known as a boxer and was also reported to have read poetry to his comrades in the trenches.
Edwin Rice died on 15th September 1916, aged 33, during an attack on The Quadrilateral.
