Frederick John Campbell was born in West Ham, one of eight children and the eldest son of William (a carpenter) and Elizabeth Sarah Campbell of 65 Saville Road, Silvertown, London.
He enlisted at Stratford.
Frederick John Campbell died on 4th October 1916, aged 28, during an attack on the Gird Lines.
Gird Lines refers to the trenches known as Gird Trench and Gird Support Trench which were part of the German front-line defences during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. These trenches were the site of heavy fighting in October and November 1916 as the British attempted to advance and capture them, sustaining many casualties in the process.
Private 22076 Frederick John Campbell has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier & Face 16A of the Thiepval Memorial in France. He is also commemorated on the West Ham War Memorial and in the West Ham Roll of Honour book.
