Jacob was one of the eight children of George (a miner and later a head gardener) and Harriet Kate Templar of Humberstone Village, Leicestershire.

He married Margaret Elizabeth Buckingham in 1907 and lived at 11 East Oak Road, Leicester. They had three sons, Charles (born in 1907), Jack (born in 1912) and Harry (born in 1914).

He was employed as a metal worker, enlisted at Leicester on 27th August 1914 and went to France on 29th July 1915.

Jacob died on 17th July 1916, aged 30, in fighting near Fricourt Wood.

During the Battle of the Somme, the 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment was in the process of moving into reserve positions following intense combat at Bazentin-le-Petit. At 1:00 am, the 6th Battalion arrived at bivouacs located just south of Fricourt Wood after being relieved in the front line by the 10th King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Despite being moved out of the direct line of assault, the area remained dangerous due to heavy shelling.

Private, 10451, Jacob Templar, 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment was one of those casualties. he has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier and Face 3A of the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing on The Somme in France.

In 1920 Margaret emigrated to Ontario in Canada, where the three boys were raised.

His brother, Private George Templar, 10560, also of the 6th Battalion had been killed three days earlier on 14th July 1916, aged 24.
