John was born in Darwen, Lancashire on 4th September 1894, one of the thirteen children of Harry (a labourer) and Betsy Shuttleworth of 490 Blackburn Road, Darwen.
He enlisted at Darwen.
Private John Shuttleworth, 201518 (4048), 1st/4th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment died on 3rd June 1917, aged 22, killed during fighting in the Villers Plouich sector.
Three of his brothers also served, his twin Private Benjamin Shuttleworth, 16251, 8th Battalion, Border Regiment, died on 5th July 1916, aged 21.
He is commemorated on Pier & Face 7C.
