Private, 23960, 149th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry).
Joseph was born in Tow Law, Co. Durham, one of at least six children of George (a coal miner) and Isabella Dickinson who later lived at Fell View, Crawcrook, Ryton, Co. Durham.
He was employed as a coal miner when he enlisted at Prudhoe, Northumberland as Private 2090, 1st/4th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. Later he transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.
Joseph Dickinson died on 15th September 1916, aged 20, during fighting at High Wood.
He is also commemorated on the Ryton War Memorial.
