Malcolm was born in Carlisle on 30th June 1897, the elder of two children, both sons, of Dr. James and Gertrude Lucy Macdonald of 17 Portland Square, Carlisle.
He was educated at Carlisle Grammar School (1907 to 1915) and then proceeded to Edinburgh University where he intended to study medicine. It was whilst he was in Edinburgh that he enlisted in December 1915.
Malcolm died on 13th October 1916, aged 19, killed by a shell during fighting at Martinpuich, part of the larger Battle of Flers-Courcelette.
Private, S/15448, ‘Malcolm Macdonald of C’ Company, 11th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier and face 15A of the Thiepval Memorial in France. He had been recommended for a commission in the Border Regiment.
