Rowland Buckley was born in November 1898, to parents Joseph and Ellen Buckley of Pistyll, Nevin, North Wales.
Rowland was a farm labourer who enlisted then 17th of March 1918 at Bangor, North Wales and was attested to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers (RWF). He was allocated service number 73706.
Following training he joined the 19th battalion RWF. On the 6th of April 1918 he was transferred to the 10th Battalion, Notts and Derby Regiment and reallocated service number 74048.
On the 15th of August 1918, the Notts & Derby lines were subjected to a three-hour gas bombardment from the enemy. All of 'D' Company were casualties, along with most of 'B' Company, of which 13 officers and 423 other ranks were casualties.
Rowland subsequently died of his injuries on the19th of August and is interred in the Daours Community Cemetery Ext, VB9.
