William Goodenough was born at Weare Giffard, near Bideford, Devin, on 3 January 1885, and attested for the Royal Marines on 31 December 1902.
After basic training at Deal he was posted to the Plymouth Division on 15 October 1903. Joining the Royal Marine Brigade on 12 December 1914.
In March 1915, before the Gallipoli landings on the 25th April, two Companies of the Plymouth Marines of the Royal Naval Division landed at Sedd-el-Bahr on the Gallipoli peninsula and at Kum Kale situated on the other side of the Dardanelles on the Asian shore.
Private Goodenough was one of those who assaulted the fort at Kum Kale and was one of the 20 men killed in this commando type action, he was killed on 4 March 1915 and is remembered on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
