Private, 19974, 6th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment.
Willie was the youngest of the eight children of Henry (a gas stoker) and Annie Rhodes of Rotherham, Yorkshire.
In 1905, he married Hannah Elizabeth Burton and they had five children, Robert (born in 1905), George (born in 1908), Lily (born in 1910), Jane E. (born in 1912) and Norah (born in 1914, died in 1915). The family lived at 5, Turo Place, St Anns Road, Rotherham.
Prior to enlisting he worked as a coal miner, and after enlisting, went to Egypt on 13th September 1915 before sailing for France in July 1916.
Willie Rhodes died on 24th September 1916, aged 30, during an attack on Mouquet Farm.
After Willie’s death Hannah married Curtis Mellors.
