Herbert was born in Norwich, Norfolk on 21st September 1891, the youngest of eight children of Henry (a grocer and wine and spirit merchant) and Ellen Mary Harcourt of St. Benedict’s Gate, Norwich.
He was educated at the Commercial School, Norwich.
Although living in Norwich he enlisted at Southwark, Surrey in January 1916.
Herbert Harcourt died on 15th September 1916, aged 24, during an attack on Switch Trench.
