Christopher was born in Leith, Midlothian, one of the six children of Christopher and Barbara Johnson Pratt. The family later lived at 41 Royal Park Terrace, Edinburgh.

He was educated at George Heriot's School between 1906 and 1915 and was a cadet in the OTC from 1913 to 1915, attaining the rank of corporal. Whilst at the school he was also a prefect, the winner of Dr. Lowe’s prize for modern languages and was awarded a university bursary.

He received his commission in August 1915 and went to France a year later on 25th August 1916.

Christopher died on 18th October 1916, aged 21, during an attack on Snag Trench, a German defensive trench in "no man's land" during the Battle of the Le Transloy. Allied troops repeatedly attempted to capture the trench, but were often repelled by heavy German machine-gun fire. The fighting resulted in massive casualties for the attackers, with some British companies losing nearly all their men in a single assault. The combat took place in extremely difficult conditions, with deep mud making movement nearly impossible.

The 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders attacked in a heavy deluge which turned the ground into a soft ooze. Despite a feeble smoke screen and the weakness of the barrage, they succeeded in taking and holding their objective, losing 67 dead.

Second Lieutenant Christopher Pratt of the 5th Battalion, Cameron Highlanders was one of those killed and has no known grave. He is commemorated on Panel and Face 15B of the Thiepval Memorial in France.
