William Armine Edwards was born on 3 May 1892 and was educated at Harrow School, where he played with the Rugby XV team and once represented the school against Eton in 1909. He then matriculated at Trinity Hall, Cambridge and later played cricket for Glamorgan.
He married in 1914 to Aerona Sails.
Edwards was already serving with the Glamorgan Yeomanry upon the outbreak of the Great War and was subsequently gazetted Second Lieutenant on 20 December 1915. The regiment was then sent to Egypt in March 1916 where it was involved in the campaign against the Senussi.
The Glamorgan Yeomanry then merged with the Pembrokeshire Yeomanry to form the 24th (Pembrokeshire and Glamorgan Yeomanry) Welsh Regiment. This new regiment joined the offensive on Gaza and Beersheba as part of the campaign to drive the Turks out of Egypt and Palestine.
Their first action there was when the regiment stormed into Turkish trenches and advanced two miles into enemy territory. It was on this day that Edwards was mortally wounded and died the following day.
He is buried at the Beersheba Military Cemetery.
