William was born in East Retford, Nottinghamshire, the eldest of the five children of Benjamin and Mary Alice Walker.
He was employed as a joiner when he enlisted at Retford on 8th September 1914 into 14th Battalion.
He gained promotion to lance corporal in December 1914, corporal in October 1915 and lance serjeant in March 1916.
He was transferred to 13th Battalion on 1st September 1916 and promoted to acting serjeant on 20th December.
He had served as a musketry instructor and was transferred to the 15th Battalion and went to France on 7th March 1917.
Serjeant William Henry Stamford Walker, 82006 (15130), 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) died on 16th May 1917, aged 23, during a raid on Les Trois Sauvage.
