Above, Edward Royle's medals: the 1939-45 Star, the War Medal 1939-45, the Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, G.V.R., 3rd issue, Regular Army as awarded to (2744989 Cpl. E. Royle. Black Watch) the first two as issued posthumously, the last mounted for wear.
Edward Royle, a Band Boy from Salford, Manchester, was born on 27 October 1901.
He attested into the Royal Highlanders (Black Watch) on the 6th of February 1917 and served in France with the 1st Battalion after the cessation of hostilities on the 16th of December 1918.
He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct (L.S.G.C.) Medal in 1935, whilst serving as a Corporal, he served during the Second War in France with the 1st Battalion and was advanced to Warrant Officer Class III on the 18th of November 1939.
He died between the 9th of June 1940 and 11 June 1940 and is buried in Ste. Marie Cemetery, Le Havre, France.
